How active acoustics supports water column research and monitoring

Echoview Software’s Dr. Haley Viehman, part of our team of Hydroacoustics Specialists, has authored an insightful article in Sea Technology Magazine, a leading publication in the ocean and marine industry.

In this article Haley explores the power of active acoustic instruments (echosounders) for understanding aquatic ecosystems. From a long history in fisheries stock assessment, the use of these tools has expanded into applications in aquaculture, ocean renewable energy, and hydropower.

This feature examines the different types of active acoustic instruments—including single-beam and multibeam echosounders—and how they provide high resolution data that physical sampling methods simply can’t match. It also covers different deployment methods and practical applications from around the world.

Haley highlights one of the key challenges in hydroacoustics—processing the vast amounts of data collected by echosounders—and the critical steps required to transform raw acoustic data into meaningful insights using processing software like Echoview.
