B2 PrePARED Fisheries Acoustician

The PrePARED project is an exciting new research project that is studying fish, marine mammal and seabird distribution and behaviour in and around offshore wind farms.

There is an opportunity for a Fisheries Acoustician to develop skills in research working within Marine Scotland in collaboration with universities and research institutes, commissioning research contracts, co-supervising PhDs and undertaking in-house research.

As a PrePARED Fisheries Acoustician the applicant will direct and coordinate acoustic surveys of fish assemblages when at sea, process the raw acoustic signal and catch data into fish abundance data and seabed type, and analyze historical acoustic data. These work streams will support the production of fish abundance data to the work package lead and the wider PrePARED project.

Essential Criteria

  1. An excellent understanding of the collection of acoustic data using systems available to MSS (EK60 echosounder / sidescan sonar) and proven experience of leading such surveys.
  2. A proven knowledge of processing the acoustic signal with echo integration software (Echoview) and a demonstrable track record in its application.
  3. Proven sea going experience and management of acoustic surveys on a research vessel.
  4. Experience of meeting project milestones, working both within a multi-disciplinary team and independently, within tight timescales.
