Dr Haley Viehman, a Hydroacoustic Specialist in Echoview’s science team, recently appeared as a guest on the That’s What I Call Science podcast, where she discussed how sound is used to study biology and ecology in aquatic environments.

“Hydroacoustics is basically using sound to look at things in the water — a bit like echolocation. It allows us to see what’s happening beneath the surface, even when the water is completely opaque.”

Based in Tasmania, Haley appeared on the podcast alongside colleague Ella Burgen, Echoview’s Technical Sales Officer. Together, they highlighted how Echoview Software supports the advancement of aquatic science globally, discussing the importance of teamwork, the company’s international reach, and its role in enabling high quality research.

As an expert in active acoustics, Haley works closely with researchers, environmental managers, and fishers globally to support sustainable aquatic ecosystems. Haley talks about what motivated her to pursue a career in aquatic sciences.

“Every day I’m helping researchers all over the world answer really different questions with the same fundamental acoustic tools. That problem solving aspect is one of my favorite parts of the job.”

We thank Haley and Ella for sharing their expertise and for delivering an engaging and insightful podcast episode.
