TEDx talk: Sound signals from an invisible world

We’re pleased to share a recent TEDx talk by Dr. Sven Gastauer, an expert in underwater acoustics and Echoview user, exploring how sound allows us to reveal the hidden dynamics of the ocean. From mapping the seafloor to tracking fish, plankton, and apex predators, Sven highlights how acoustic technologies are transforming our understanding of marine ecosystems.

Dr. Gastauer is a senior scientist at the Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries, a visiting scholar at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and chair to the ICES Working Group on Fisheries Acoustics, Science and Technology. His work spans a wide range of marine environments, using platforms from large research vessels to autonomous underwater vehicles and moored instruments.

Sven is also helping foster connection and discussion through the Ocean Acoustics & Technology forum, a space for researchers, students, and practitioners to share ideas, ask questions, and connect across the field.

Echoview values collaborative approaches to hydroacoustic science, offers flexible licensing options, and shares helpful resources with the global active acoustics community to support research at all levels.
