Thurso, Scotland
3 year posts starting July 2025

The University of Highlands and Irelands (UHI), North, West and Hebrides in the Environmental Research Institute (ERI), are seeking researchers to join their expanding team. Successful candidates will work alongside leading scientists, develop innovative methodologies, and contribute to vital policy decisions shaping the future of sustainable offshore renewables.

They are recruiting four multidisciplinary researchers, with opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration and for candidates to bring and build their own research portfolios, depending on experience. The vacancies include:

Research Associate in Marine Sensing

The post holders will be responsible for the design, construction, test, calibration and deployment / data collection / servicing of multi-instrument seabed platforms. You will support sensor integration for ship-based surveys, integration of new sensors into turbine-based measurements and develop new research areas of uncrewed or autonomous surface vehicle measurements.

Research Associate in Passive Acoustic Monitoring

The position will be responsible for processing data from seabed passive acoustic ‘click detectors’ and develop and apply processing techniques for data from broadband sound recorders for concurrent measures of ambient and turbine noise. You will support the wider passive acoustic measurement campaigns and platform integration as well as the wider portfolio of marine renewable energy research.

Research Associate in Active Acoustic Monitoring

The post holders will develop and apply processing techniques to active acoustic data from multi-frequency echosounders on autonomous landers and ships to discriminate large zooplankton, individual fish and schools, including investigating differences between species groups. You will investigate the mechanisms affecting prey fish presence and behaviour around fixed and floating offshore wind farms. You will contribute to the design and data collection of their upcoming multi-platform and multi-ship field campaigns in 2025, 2026 and beyond.

Research Associate in Algorithm Development and Data Science

The suitable candidates will have the knowledge, skills and experience associated with a first degree, together with a PhD or equivalent professional qualification/ at least 4 years appropriate professional experience. You will have the developing ability to prepare research proposals, to conduct individual research work and to disseminate results.
