The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Data Scientist 3 position to work in Galveston, TX, Pascagoula, MS, or Miami, FL (or remotely), in support of developing analytical methods for echo classification of active acoustic (echosounder) data.
The Data Scientist 3 will join their research team in the Advanced Technology and Innovation Branch of the NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center. The successful candidate will collaborate on a national research project aimed at modernizing the analysis of active acoustic (echosounder) data. The goal of this project is to revolutionize echo classification by developing processing techniques (AI/ML) and building a cloud-based framework that will promote development and implementation of advanced analytical methods to classify acoustic backscatter to the lowest taxonomic level possible in near-real time.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree pertinent to the following experience
- Proficiency in machine learning or other AI methods
- Proficiency in software languages, e.g. Python, R
- Google Cloud Platform (GCP) experience
- Experience with or knowledge of Bayesian methods and relational databases
- Experience with, knowledge of, or willingness to learn common echosounder data software, e.g. Echoview, Echopype, PyEchoLab
- Experience with, knowledge of, or willingness to learn the principles and theories of fisheries acoustics, echosounder data analysis, and echo classification
- Access to the NOAA Federal Center’s computers is necessary to perform the work of this position. Access is not available for individuals working in the United States through a visa or a working permit.
