Sharing Antarctic stories at Hobartica

We’re pleased to be celebrating National Science Week in Australia, a time to reflect on how science contributes to our lives, our communities, and our environment.

It’s important to highlight the science of hydroacoustics and its vital role in supporting the sustainable management of marine, freshwater, and estuarine ecosystems. We're also proud to recognise the diverse scientific journeys within our team, and this year, one of our own will be sharing her personal journey to Antarctica.

Echoview’s Technical Documentation Lead, Suenor Woon, will be participating in, ‘Antarctic Women’s Voices: Storytelling in the huts’, a public event celebrating personal experiences in Antarctica as part of the 2025 Beaker Street Festival program.

The event will feature four women sharing their Antarctic stories in a relaxed, drop-in setting. Visitors can come and go, ask questions, and engage in informal conversations about life and work on the icy continent.

Suenor will present "What I Did Last Summer – Life in the 1995/1996 Law Dome Ice Coring Camp", a firsthand account of living and working over 100 kilometres inland from Casey Station, Antarctica. Suenor was part of an eight-person team operating a remote, self-contained camp at Law Dome, the site of a 1,200-metre-thick ice cap. Their mission was for glaciologists to retrieve deep ice cores containing valuable records of atmospheric and environmental conditions dating back more than 10,000 years.

In addition to deep-core drilling, the camp team managed daily tasks such as temperature profiling, shallow core retrieval, equipment maintenance, cooking, and maintaining radio contact with Casey Station — all while navigating harsh conditions ranging from -10 to -30°C, with the occasional blizzard and sightings of the aurora.

This project is presented by Beaker Street, in partnership with Antarctic Women’s Network and Mawson's Huts Replica Museum. For more information please visit the Beaker Street website.
